How much Google Ads costs: spend, management fees and a realistic budget
How much Google Ads costs: what you pay Google, what an agency charges to manage it and what budget you need for it to pay off.
How long does it take to rank a website on Google? It is the question every business owner asks when they invest in SEO. The short answer: between 3 and 12 months. But plenty of factors can speed that up or slow it down.
These timescales apply both to traditional organic rankings and to appearing in Google’s AI Overviews, where sites with authority, structured content and a good user experience have the advantage.
In this guide we explain the real timescales for ranking a website, which factors matter and what you can do to speed results up. Based on the experience of our SEO agency in Barcelona, where we have spent more than two decades ranking businesses on Google.
Most SEO experts agree that the first visible results appear between 3 and 6 months of steady work. Reaching the top of the first page of Google, though, can take between 6 and 12 months, or longer in highly competitive sectors.
An Ahrefs study of more than 2 million keywords revealed something telling: the average age of pages in Google’s top 10 is over 600 days. For the top 3, that figure rises to more than 800 days.
That does not mean you have to wait two years. What it shows is that SEO is a long-term investment and that sites which have been working on their rankings for a while have the advantage. The good news is that with a well-executed strategy you can start seeing results much sooner.
So you know what to expect, here is what each phase of the process looks like:
Months 0 to 3: indexing and fine-tuning
During the first three months, Google is getting to know your site. It indexes your pages, analyses your content and begins to understand what your site is about. It is normal not to see significant ranking changes at this stage.
Months 3 to 6: the first movement
This is when you start noticing improvements. Your keywords begin to climb, especially the low-competition ones. If you have worked on local SEO, you are probably already appearing in geographic searches.
Months 6 to 12: steady growth
With a consistent strategy, this is where growth becomes more solid. Your main keywords start reaching the first page.
Month 12 onwards: consolidation
After a year, your site has enough authority to compete for harder terms.
Not every site takes the same time to rank. Several factors decide whether your project takes 3 months or 18 to reach good results:
Competition in your sector: In a niche with little competition you can rank faster. In sectors such as insurance or technology, competitors have years of head start.
Domain age: Google trusts domains with history more. A 5-year-old domain has an advantage over a brand new one.
Content quality: Content that answers the search intent better ranks faster.
Backlink profile: Inbound links from other quality sites speed up rankings.
Technical SEO: A fast, secure, well-structured site makes Google’s job easier.
Domain authority is one of the biggest factors in how quickly you rank. Tools such as Ahrefs, Moz and Semrush assign a score based on the quantity and quality of links pointing to your site.
A site with high authority can publish an article and rank it within weeks. The same site with low authority might take months to achieve the same thing.
For new sites or those with little authority, the strategy is to build that authority through quality link building, mentions in relevant media and content that earns links naturally.
The good news is that authority can be built. With a consistent strategy, a site can go from authority 0 to 30 in under a year.
Google has made clear that useful, original content comes first. Its system rewards pages that demonstrate experience, authority and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T).
Content that ranks quickly has these characteristics:
It answers the search intent: If someone asks how long a site takes to rank, they want concrete timescales, not a definition of SEO.
It is more complete than the competition: Not necessarily longer, but more useful.
It shows real experience: Generic content is obvious. Google prefers content from someone who knows the subject.
It is up to date: Obsolete information loses positions.
Not all keywords are equally hard to rank for. Keyword difficulty (KD) indicates how much effort it takes to reach the first page.
Low-competition keywords (KD under 30): Can rank in 1 to 3 months with quality content.
Medium-competition keywords (KD 30-50): Take between 3 and 6 months of work and some backlinks.
High-competition keywords (KD above 50): Can take from 6 months to more than a year.
The smart strategy for new sites is to start with low-competition keywords, win those positions and use that traction to go after harder terms.
Local SEO usually produces results faster than national SEO. Adding a location to your keyword drastically reduces the competition.
For example, “SEO agency” nationally competes with thousands of sites. But “SEO agency Igualada” has far fewer competitors, which makes ranking possible within weeks.
The advantages of local SEO:
Less competition: Fewer sites competing for the same term.
Google Business Profile: Your listing can appear in the local pack from day one.
Clear local signals: Your local address and phone number help Google understand your geographic relevance.
A SEO agency will prioritise local rankings before competing nationally.
SEO takes time, but there are ways to speed the process up:
Sort out technical SEO from the start: A fast, secure site on HTTPS and adapted for mobile lets Google index your content without obstacles.
Create strategic content: Research what your audience is looking for and answer it better than anyone else.
Build quality backlinks: One link from a relevant publication is worth more than a hundred from generic directories.
Make use of Google Search Console: Request indexing for new pages and monitor how Google sees your site.
Update existing content: Improving articles that already have traction is faster than starting from scratch.
Strategic internal linking: Connect your important pages to spread authority.
Transparent rates for SEO, web design and maintenance. No surprises, no small print.
SEO does not have to be your only source of traffic while you wait:
Google Ads: Google Ads campaigns let you appear immediately in the paid results while your site climbs the organic ones.
Social media: Sharing your content can bring direct traffic and potential backlinks.
Email marketing: If you have a list, use it to promote your new content.
Collaborations: Guest posting on blogs in your field can earn links and visibility.
Combining SEO with paid advertising is especially effective: Google Ads gives immediate results while SEO builds a long-term asset.
Some common mistakes can make your site take far longer to rank:
Chasing impossible keywords: Going after extremely competitive terms with a new site is a waste of time.
Low-quality content: Publishing without adding value does not work. One excellent article a month beats four mediocre ones.
Ignoring technical SEO: A slow site, or one with crawl errors, holds back any strategy.
Buying poor-quality links: Links from link farms can lead to penalties.
A lack of consistency: SEO needs continuous work.
Not measuring results: Without tracking, you cannot know what works.
Keyword cannibalisation: Several pages competing for the same term confuses Google.
Online stores have particularities that affect the timescales:
More pages to rank: Every category and product is an opportunity, but also more work.
Competing with giants: In e-commerce you are up against Amazon and the big marketplaces.
Transactional keywords: Terms with purchase intent face more competition.
For a new online store, it is realistic to expect 3 to 6 months for niche products, 6 to 12 months for main categories and more than 12 months for generic terms.

It is very difficult except for very low-competition keywords or local searches with little rivalry. SEO needs time for Google to crawl, index and assess your content against the competition. Typically you start seeing movement from the third month and solid results between months six and twelve.
Yes, a new site generally needs more time because it starts from zero domain authority. Google trusts domains that have been active for a while, have a content history and have accumulated quality links. A new site can take 6-12 months to compete for mid-range keywords, while an established one may manage it in 3-6.
Yes, quality links from relevant, authoritative sites are one of the factors that can accelerate rankings most. They must be natural and from legitimate sources, though. Buying cheap links from spam directories can have the opposite effect: a Google penalty that loses you positions rather than gaining them.
Yes, local SEO usually delivers results faster because there is less competition. Ranking for “plumber in Igualada” means far fewer competitors than “plumber in Spain”. On top of that, Google Business Profile can start generating visibility in the local pack within the first few weeks if it is optimised properly.
The results do not disappear overnight, but they degrade steadily. Competitors keep working, Google updates its algorithm constantly and content goes out of date. Without SEO maintenance, most sites start losing positions between 3 and 6 months after the work stops.
Yes. Google’s AI Overviews favour content from sites that already have some authority and established organic rankings. A newly published site is unlikely to appear in those AI answers. You first need to build authority with traditional SEO and, as your site gains positions and trust, the chances of being cited in AI Overviews rise.
